Frequently Asked Questions
How are your in-house garments made?
Every Saint Joan handmade piece is constructed by hand at our Blue Mountains studio with care and intention. We work slowly, in small batches, using time-honoured techniques and a deep respect for the creative process.
Each garment is the result of thoughtful design, experimentation, and the natural rhythm of studio life.
I missed out! Will you restock a sold-out piece?
Most pieces are one-off designs that won’t be restocked. If you see something you love, we recommend acting sooner rather than later — most garments are made in very limited quantities due to the nature and availability of vintage fabrics, and often our garments are 1 of 1.
Where do you get your vintage garments from?
Everywhere imaginable. Some come from trusted sources via the US and Europe, others are found in pre-landfill & charity shops, garage sales, and deep corners of the internet. I never kiss and tell! But, we are very proud that every single piece is hand-picked, and nothing is bought in bulk. It's all about the magic of the hunt.
Do you accept vintage/ pre-loved garments as trade-ins?
Studio Saint Joan doesn’t accept outside clothing or trade-ins. Every piece is hand-sourced, slowly and intentionally, as part of our design process. This helps us maintain the integrity, quality, and vision behind our collection.
How can I find out when new pieces are released?
All shop updates are announced in advance via instagram and our mailing list. Sign up or follow along to stay in the loop about new drops, restocks, and behind-the-scenes studio notes.
Do you offer custom sizing or alterations?
Our in-house garments are made in standard sizes as listed in each product description. At this time we are not able to offer alterations or tailoring. However, there are a number of excellent neighbourhood dry cleaners who also offer tailoring services.
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
Due to the handmade nature of each piece, we’re unable to offer returns or exchanges at this time. Please read the sizing and product details carefully before purchasing, and reach out with any questions prior to ordering.
Do you take commissions or custom orders?
No — I’ve made the decision to no longer offer custom garments or commissioned work. After some time doing this in the past, I’ve found that creating within the structure of custom requests doesn’t support my process or creativity.
Our in-house label is made in small, organic batches and released through the shop and here online.
Thank you for supporting this boundary and the rhythm of slow fashion.
What does ‘slow fashion’ mean?
To me, slow fashion means making fewer things, more thoughtfully. It’s about taking the time to create pieces that feel considered, rather than rushed. It also means working sustainably, using ethical and existing materials, and at a human pace — with room to breathe, pause, and evolve.
What materials do you use?
Materials vary by garment, but I try to work with vintage textiles including wool & linen, deadstock, and low-impact fabrics - sourced locally where possible. Each garment listing will include fabric details. I’m always exploring new ways to make responsible material choices.
